As with most people who value the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle, there are certain things I make time for every single day in order to feel my best. I’m one of those women who thrives off of a routine and do my best with structure and reliability on a set schedule. While that may sound boring, it actually helps me stay properly fueled, manage stress, helps me create better, work more efficiently, and maintain optimal energy levels too.
That being said, there are five specific things that I make time for every single day that I have practiced for 12 years since adopting a healthy lifestyle over a decade ago. So I thought, why not share these with you? I often find inspiration from others, so I thought many of you may find my personal practices interesting too.
So without further ado, here are the top 5 things I make time for every single day in order to live my best, healthiest life possible!
1. Being Active and Moving My Body Daily
As you’ll see, I didn’t just say “exercise” or “workout” because there are many more benefits to moving than just burning calories or clicking off reps at a gym. I actually used to be a gym rat and still love working out at one when I can, but as I get older, I now see the value in moving in all kinds of different ways. I don’t even wear a pedometer or similar device to track how many calories I burn because for me, living well is about listening to how my body likes to move and how much it needs to do so that day.
Moving keeps my mind sharp, it keeps me from sitting too long, it helps me focus better when I work, and it helps me manage my symptoms of a history with depression naturally. Plus, moving is fun! I like to walk 3-4 miles every single day and do yoga each evening. When I get the chance, taking hikes or going exploring are also fun ways I enjoy moving. I also work while standing when possible, because we all know sitting too long isn’t ideal!
2. Eating Foods Rich in Fiber Including Fruits, Vegetables and Greens, and Whole Grains
These three foods are my top core three food groups that I base my diet off of, no matter what. They are essential to me feeling my best on a plant-based lifestyle, they keep my body feeling light and energized, and they are the top three foods consistently linked to better health. I find that these three food groups also keep my skin youthful year to year, and they help me feel my best due to all the natural fiber they have. Fiber is important for our blood sugar levels, our weight and metabolism, our hearts, and our gut health.
I eat any and all fruits, veggies, greens, and most all whole grains. Some of my favorite meals using these foods are oatmeal/porridge and smoothies, a high-quality whole grain cereal with fruit, non-dairy yogurt with fruit, cooked veggies and whole grains, soups and stews, or baked items using these foods. In fact, one of my favorite whole grain products that I buy on a regular basis is Post Shredded Wheat®.
I like the original flavor of Shredded Wheat since it’s made of 100% whole grain wheat (with nothing added!), and because I love it so much, I have my family hooked on many of the other offerings by Shredded Wheat too. They love the flavor varieties of Shredded Wheat, (especially the new Cinnamon Roll flavor!) and it’s nice to know we can all enjoy our own favorite while still being together. Shredded Wheat comes in three new flavors including Cinnamon Roll, Mixed Berry, and S’mores Bites. Get a coupon down below for all Shredded Wheat products and see where to buy them!
Speaking of which, one of the best things I have managed to teach my family is that when you buy cereal, you should always look for a 100% whole grain cereal. Eating a whole grain or whole grain cereal is a great way to get whole grain fiber into your diet because it’s quick and manageable. Shredded Wheat is my favorite kind of whole grain boxed cereal of all those on the market. I love to use it in smoothies, on top of oatmeal, or just make a quick snack with it in a bowl with some cinnamon and ginger sprinkled on top. It’s also great paired with fruit, another great source of fiber. Shredded Wheat is also an excellent source of fiber and has several natural sources of vitamins, minerals, and protein from the whole grain wheat it contains.
3. Connecting With Friends and Family Daily
My family is so important to me, and although we have our rough patches like any other family, I would not be where I am without them. Talking with them daily and being a part of each other’s lives is so important. I feel more whole, happy, and healthy as a person inside and out when I connect more often with my family. I also love connecting with friends, whether online or in person, and doing so helps me relate better to others while also getting outside my own “monkey mind” as I like to call it. As someone who is a natural introvert and very “inward” with her feelings, this item is one of the things on my list I have to work at, but it’s always worth it when I step outside myself and connect with those that are important to me.
4. Taking Time to Journal and Self-Reflect
My meditation time is actually both yoga and journaling. I find these two practices more effective for me to self-reflect and get outside my own head than traditional meditation practices are. This being said, I find my calmest moments and best epiphanies when I am doing yoga and journaling or just writing down my thoughts. Many times, I like to journal over tea, outside, or just sit with my thoughts before writing anything down. This helps me feel more balanced, helps me consider my truest feelings more than my initial impulses or instincts, and many times it helps connect me to the real me versus what I think I should be. I also pray during this time and talk to God, as it’s essential to me being well and whole on a deeper level.
5. Spending Time Outdoors, Even if Just a Few Minutes
I love to sit outside each day for a few minutes or take a walk outside whenever I can. When the weather is nice, my mom and I also like to spend time outdoors together, even if just for a few minutes in the late afternoon. Sometimes on the weekends, we like to take day trips together and spend time in nature as well. Spending time outside is great for the soul and is a nice way to relax almost instantly, even if you’re still stressed or dealing with hard issues in life. I have even found eating lunch outside or working outside to be effective!
My mom and I love to sit outside together in the late afternoon, usually over coffee. We also sometimes enjoy a bowl of Shredded Wheat together for a quick snack and I love that Post offers a variety that both of us can enjoy. I stick to my original Shredded Wheat with almond milk and my mom really likes the new Cinnamon Roll flavor of Shredded Wheat.
My mom is also my favorite person in the world and loves to spend time outdoors, so enjoying that with her has always been special to me because it means we can sit in a setting she loves and talk for however long the day’s time allows. She is going through a tough time right now with her health, so my memories and time with her thus far have been precious in ways I could never express. Plus, it’s always nice to be able to connect with people that are important to us over small, daily practices and rituals that fuel us and keep us healthy on the inside and out.
There are many ways to take care of yourself with small, daily practices and choices that add up to bigger, better things. These are my five items, but feel free to share yours with me if you have some of your own! I’d love to hear what keeps you happy, healthy, and whole.
Whatever you’re into, remember to fuel your body and lifestyle with movement, time outdoors, time with people you love, self-reflection, and a diet filled with fruits, veggies, and whole grains like Shredded Wheat. You can find Shredded Wheat, including the new varieties like the Cinnamon Roll flavor my mom loves, at your local Walmart where I bought mine. Shredded Wheat is found on the aisle where the boxed cereal is located as shown below.
