Summer is the best time to cool off with a nutrient-packed smoothie, and I particularly love my summertime smoothies made thick, cold, and frosty. They’re a great way to cool off, refresh your body, and give yourself something delicious too. I also love making my smoothies with creative ingredients that are always inspired by plant-based foods, so I’m sharing some of my favorites with all of you!
Shake up your blender this season with something new and try one of my favorite smoothies to enjoy during summer!
How I Became a Blender-Obsessed, Smoothie-Making-Aholic: My Story
If you know me, you know I love smoothies and all things blender made. I’m a self-professed, smoothie obsessed blending queen who is always looking to try something new when it comes to experimenting with her blender. I’ve mentioned before that I adopted this love for blenders and smoothies during my teens when I worked as a soda fountain girl in my old, small hometown where I had my first job during high school. I paid for my first car with that job, met my first love while working that job, and fully indulged in ice cream daily at that job. I became a woman at that job and went off to college while working that job. Five years in the running, I blended my way through life while enjoying how a simple blender could bring so much creativity into my hands as well as bring a smile to a stranger or friend’s face as I handed them their personal drink of choice with a special touch, just from me. 🙂
Later on, way after that job, I found my way into my own kitchen with an old, beat-up blender my mom had. Then I bought my own at Walmart (go figure!), and later on, I finally quit buying the store-bought blenders and used my tax money one year at my first “real job” to buy a Vitamix (best decision I never made with major purchases!). I’ve had my Vitamix many years now and just love how it’s helped me live healthier. Now, I also have a Nutribullet, a smaller Vitamix, and even the new KitchenAid blender too (they really are all different!). I don’t say that to brag or be showy, but to simply prove that I am not your average smoothie maker. I truly do love blenders and everything they can do. It’s a healthy passion, right? 🙂
The truth is, a blender can do so much more than smoothies; it can make ice cream (or nice cream without using dairy), puddings, porridge, homemade whole grains or flours, nut milks, non-dairy dips and dressings, sauces, soups without using the stove, and so much more. But nothing makes me happier than using mine to make a superfood packed smoothie!
But no matter how many times I make a smoothie, smoothie bowl, or shake, I’m constantly amazed how different they all are. You can blend with different liquids, fruits, veggies, superfoods, seeds, nuts, and protein powders to get all sorts of wonderful creations that taste nothing alike and absolutely wonderful all the same. It’s like magic!
Smoothie Tips: Troubleshooting and Getting the Right Blend – Consistency is Key!
If you’re making smoothies that turn out liquidy, off-tasting, or somewhat less-than-appealing, no need to fret! You’re likely just using too much liquid or not using the right combination of ingredients. I remember one time I made a friend my daily go-to green superfood smoothie. She couldn’t believe how good something so healthy could taste. Later on, she went home to make it herself and used a couple different ingredients and hated how it came out. I explained to her that the slightest little bit of changes could make or break a drink, and once she found the right combo for her, she started loving the smoothies she made each day too.
One thing I love to do before I make a smoothie or shake is to be sure to start with really cold, preferably frozen ingredients. Frozen ingredients are often fresher than non-frozen because they’re frozen right after harvest and never sit on store shelves where their nutrients disintegrate. Focus on buying organic to preserve the most nutrition in your food, but don’t worry if you can only afford frozen organic ingredients–that’s great! Frozen is cheaper than fresh, easier to store than fresh, and you’ll waste less while contributing to a great cause. Plus, you’ll have the best smoothie ingredients on hand too!
Tasting Tips: How to Get a Great-Tasting Smoothie – Sweetness and Temperature
Colder blends always taste better than room-temp smoothies, so start with cold ingredients. So try not to use too much liquid, but don’t be afraid to experiment with different liquid options. My favorites to use are a 1:1 mix of non-dairy, unsweetened almond milk (or unsweetened cashew milk) by Silk and cold, filtered water. I prefer not to use juice and would rather use the whole fruit since it’s easier on my blood sugar levels and also better for us because we’re getting the whole fruit with the fiber.
Finally, I like to add a little sweetness to all my blends. I use Medjool dates, NuNaturals pure stevia extract (not artificial and contains just pure stevia), pure organic maple syrup (in small amounts, about 1 tsp.), and I also enjoy using frozen banana and frozen mango. Frozen watermelon, berries, frozen apple slices, pineapple, and frozen cantaloupe are also some of my favorite sweeteners. Wild blueberries, frozen carrots, and even frozen butternut squash also add a little sweetness to your smoothie, not to mention loads of nutrition!
Finally, Add Some Nutrition – Don’t Fear the Greens and Veggies!
My favorite veggies to blend? I love frozen cucumber, frozen cauliflower, frozen zucchini, and even broccoli (you can’t even taste it if you blend it right!), and even frozen asparagus can all be thrown in that blender too. Mix it with some chocolate, some Vega One, a little maca, and some goji berries, blueberries, a couple dates, or an acai pack, and you’ve got a truly awesome treat that makes you feel good from your head to your toes! 🙂
Veggies contain not just vitamins, but also fiber just like fruits do ( which are equally wonderful), along with phytochemicals, antioxidants, and more. They are incredible at fighting fatigue, aging, sugar cravings, and you can’t even taste them if you add in the right ingredients along with them (a little raw chocolate is really helpful for this!).
In all honesty, I’m not afraid to use most anything in my blends, but I do have several classic favorites that always win out, so I thought I’d share my top 5 Favorite Smoothies to Enjoy During Summer in case you’re looking for some ideas of your own.
