Magical Mango Virgin Margarita Smoothie is a delicious mocktail smoothie that’s fruity, frosty, naturally sweet, and filled with nutrition. Instead of alcohol, this recipe uses coconut water plus real orange and lime for a healthier version of a margarita that is truly something special! Sip your worries away while being kind to your liver at the same time!
It’s 5 o’ clock somewhere, right? 🙂
Okay, let’s get this outta the way first… yes, this is a virgin margarita, so let me explain before some of you tequila lovers get mad at me!
I don’t drink and never have; it’s just not my thing or my scene. I don’t judge anyone who does, though, because to each her own is what I say. However, I have always, always loved fruity drinks, so when I was small my mom and dad would sometimes order me a virgin version of daiquiris and piña coladas off the menu at various restaurants. I thought I was the stuff sippin’ on those fruity, beautiful drinks with long, pretty straws. I’m almost sure that’s when I first fell in love with the idea of blended drinks, in fact.
For whatever reason, drinking alcohol just never appealed to me growing up, even though most all of my friends did on the weekends. However, in my mid-twenties, I somehow decided that I would take a job as a part-time bartender to save up to move to New York City. That job worked well for me in terms of saving money, (although the bar scene is not at all me), and one of the first drinks I learned to make was a real margarita.
After that, I started crafting blended versions of margaritas for people and they loved them. I’m telling you, I just can’t help myself when I’m around a blender; it’s like a kid in a candy store!
So since the end of summer is upon us and Labor Day is coming up soon, I thought I’d share a special margarita-inspired recipe with you to give you something to kick back and relax with that also happens to be good for you too! 🙂
Magical Mango Virgin Margarita Smoothie is a great source of vitamins A and C thanks to the mango it has, it has more potassium than 3 bananas (!!!), it’s high in trace minerals, has fiber, and is packed with antioxidants that will make you feel awesome. Best of all, without the sugar and alcohol, it’s also kind to your liver too!
Technically, you do need tequila to make a real margarita, but a virgin version is quite easy to pull off if you have the right ingredients. My Magical Mango Virgin Margarita Smoothie is made with real coconut water as the base instead of tequila for an incredibly smooth texture that gives the drink a really special “what is that?” kind of flavor that lets you know you’re drinking something out of the ordinary. Instead of simple syrup (aka sugar syrup), my version uses real fruit and coconut water to sweeten it naturally. And finally, instead of orange liquor, we’re using straight up real orange in this recipe!
Fun fact: Plain coconut water is an excellent source of potassium and is also low in calories, is naturally fat-free, has no added sugar, and is awesome to use in smoothies. It also works perfectly in this recipe because it helps create a bit sweeter, frostier drink than a normal smoothie made with non-dairy milk or water. Trust me on this one!
This recipe has all the classic flavors of a margarita from real orange and lime, plus it is also made with frozen mango, which I have to tell you is incredible when combined with the coconut water. You honestly feel like you’re sipping away all your worries with a glass of this in your hand, friends!
I know this recipe isn’t served in an authentic margarita glass, but I say virgin margaritas can do whatever they want, right? 🙂 I actually like to use these hurricane glasses much better for mocktail recipes, especially smoothies, simply because they hold more and I think they’re prettier.
Kids will love this recipe, too, so be sure to let them join in on the fun if you have children and want to share a fun, healthy, fruity mocktail drink with them. Also, feel free to add salt to the rim of your glass for an even more authentic margarita feel, but I’m a sweet kinda gal so I left it off of mine.
Cheers to the end of summer!
- 1¼ cup of plain coconut water
- juice of 1 lime
- 1 orange, peeled and seeded
- 1 cup of frozen mango
- ¼ cup of frozen pineapple (makes it sweeter and frostier)
- optional garnish: lime slices, coconut shreds
- First, cut the orange into 4 quarters and make sure the seeds are removed.
- Next, add all the ingredients to a high-speed blender in the order listed.
- Blend on low, then progress to high until thick and frosty.
- Pour into a tall glass, serve with a slice or two of lime and shredded coconut for a pretty garnish. You can also line the glass with a bit of lime juice and salt if you want a more authentic margarita recipe, but I left it off of mine. Enjoy!
For those of you over 21 years of age, feel free to adulterate this recipe with a couple ounces of tequila for the real version if you feel obliged to do so, but I have to warn you, this virgin version is pretty darn tasty, not to mention so much better for you. 🙂
