If you’ve read my blog for any amount of time, you already know that digestive health is something that I’ve struggled with my entire life. Luckily, eating a plant-based diet has helped me immensely with digestion, among other health issues, but I also incorporate several steps during the day for optimal digestive health that I find help me even further.
The truth is that different tips work for everyone, but when it comes to digestive health, there are also many common tips we can all use to support optimal digestive health around the clock. So without further ado, here are five simple ways I support my digestive health that I’ve been practicing for years now. If you’re looking for tips to support your own digestive health, give these tips a try and see how they work for you!
1. Base Your Meals Off Simple, Whole Plant Foods
You’ll see me mention this tip in a variety of my posts, and there’s a good reason for that. Whole plant foods are full of goodness for digestion, including fiber, vitamins, and minerals that encourage healthy digestion. I always encourage everyone to base their meals off simple whole foods instead of eating overly complex meals that can be harder to digest.
One of my favorite examples of this that I practice daily is my first meal of the day, which is always a simple bowl of fruit. I choose whatever fresh and frozen fruits I want that day, fill up a bowl, and enjoy it with my coffee. It’s my favorite simple meal of the day and always makes my tummy feel good, too!
2. Incorporate a Fiber-Rich Green Smoothie Into Your Day
Another tip that I have been practicing for the last 10 years and one I always advise to clients is to incorporate a fiber-rich green smoothie into their day. Plants are full of fiber-rich goodness, and they are also easy to blend into a delicious smoothie!
Having a daily green smoothie is an easy way to get more fruits and veggies into your diet that you might not otherwise eat. You can choose any green veggies or greens that you like, and I promise, if you add fruits to the blender with the greens and veggies, your smoothie will not come out tasting like veggie soup!

I am a firm believer in the benefits of taking a probiotic supplement each day and have been taking them for 10 years now to support my digestive health. I take a probiotic first thing each day before my first meal and find it greatly helps my digestion all day long. 4. Incorporate Walking Into Your Daily Routine
I’m a huge believer in the benefits of walking before or after a meal. I know that has nothing to do with the actual eating process, but believe me, you’ll notice a big difference in your digestion when you start incorporating gentle movement like walking into your daily routine. Plus, walking is free whether you do it inside on a treadmill or outdoors in nature.
I love when fall rolls around and I get to take my daily walks outside! Walking not only helps your digestive system move along but is also great for heart health, as we all know. I personally love to walk for an hour each day, preferably before my first meal on an empty stomach or in the late afternoon just before dinner.
5. Take Time to Sit Down and Eat Your Meals
I think we can all agree that eating on the run isn’t the most peaceful choice or the best for optimal digestion. When we’re stressed and eat in a hurry, our digestion isn’t as optimal as when we can eat in a calm manner, enjoying each bite and slowing down to chew our food properly. Sitting down to take time to eat is so important for digestion versus eating on the run or eating standing up in the kitchen because we don’t think we have time to sit and eat. (Hey, I’ve been there!)
I now make it a point to actually wait to eat until I can eat in a calm, quiet manner before having my meals because I know it has such a big effect on how well I digest my food and feel the rest of the day. I also love to eat outside when I can in nature, which is really peaceful and such a great way to calm down and take time to enjoy a meal. Definitely give this tip a try; it’s one of my favorite health tips that I could ever give you!

- 2 kiwis
- 1 pear
- 1 cup frozen zucchini
- ½ a frozen banana
- 1 tbsp. chia seeds
- 1 cup of unsweetened
- ½ cup cold filtered water (or unsweetened coconut water)
- optional: 1 scoop of vanilla plant-based protein
- optional: 1 tbsp. of a natural fiber supplement, such as Benefiber® Prebiotic Fiber Supplement
- Wash the pear and
- Then cut the peels off the
kiwis(or leave them on if you wish).
- Add all the ingredients to a high-speed blender in the order listed, blend, and enjoy!
